This is a matter of fact, straightforward autobiography, told with pictures in abundance One feels the book was was done in a rush or in spare moments between scenes The childhood material is interesting and shows how significant early experiences are on the development of the adult personality Helen Mirren is very much her parents daughter they were clearly outstanding characters While her theatrical career is well covered, I should have liked considerably information about the films she has dignified with her marvellous acting gift She worked with Peter Brook we learn quite a lot about his theatrical experiments in Africa though his inspirational Gurdjieff is not mentioned , as well as the great Michael Powell, Lindsay Anderson and Ken Russell among many others in that fascinating early 1970s period of British film making and one would like to know a lot about that, and also things like the famous Parkinson interview, and her frank attitude to sex in the movies that is such a striking aspect of her film appearances She was never a dolly bird or someone exploited in the proverbial manner of the 60s and 70s I should have thought the awful Parkinson interview was worth a paragraph of reflection I remember the broadcast very well when it was shown, and, in my subjective view, showed Parkinson up for the low level of his consciousness and professional conceit at that time already evinced also in his abysmal treatment of Yoko Ono in John and Yoko s last British interview in the UK no surprise they left the UK after that One could see Helen Mirren was a very special individual, a unique, loveable talent There weren t enough films up to her talents made in those days Anyhow, Helen Mirren didn t seem too keen to go back over those memories, doubtless for personal reasons I should have liked to know about her LSD trip as well Did it shed any light on anything What came over in the book was what an excellent career her hard work and dedication to craft has brought her it has not made her a writer, but that what not the point, was it
